The involvement of the Holy Spirit is crucial in a child’s life. John 14:26 says,

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

 1. If a child is to experience anything in the Christian life that has eternal value, the Holy Spirit is involved. The Holy Spirit is vital to a child. He is the One rooting for them, and kids need to know that. Romans 8:26-27 says this: 

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” 

2. Children go through times when they feel that something before them is beyond their ability. Help them to understand:

• He prepares the good works they are to do (Ephesians 2:10).
• He accomplishes it through them (Philippians 2:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:24).
• He prays for us (Romans 8:27).

 I have never known a better way of pulling for someone’s success than by praying for them. 

3. God is at work, and it is amazing to see kids realize that the Holy Spirit is for them. Early in a child’s life they need to know about the Spirit’s charis (grace). In Romans 12 the Apostle continues his dialogue about the Spirit’s involvement in our life. Romans 12:6 says,

^“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them.”

Dr. Wave Nunnally, a professor at Evangel University, says this, “This is God’s enabling power that He infuses into human beings to enable them to do what they can’t do in their own human strength.” Wow, I think children in this day and age—with all the movies, books, and toys involving superheros—would want to know about the Holy Spirit who gives them supernatural gifts and powers to do what is beyond their capabilities. 

My son Gabriel gave me an awesome example of the Spirit pulling for Him one Sunday morning. We had planned on taking a couple of young boys who came from rough, fatherless homes to the youth turkey hunt here in Missouri. It started to pour rain outside, and my son became discouraged. He said to God, “God, we are trying to do a good thing here, and I really want us to go, so could you please stop the rain? I am going to count down from ten. Can you stop it when I get to zero?” So he counted down, and when he got to zero it went from a downpour to completely stopping. That resulted from him knowing the Holy Spirit, His power, and that He is pulling for us.
